Holy Fire® Reiki Overview
Holy Fire® Reiki is a type of Reiki energy and a system of Reiki healing based on Holy Fire® energy. Mentioned in the Bible, Holy Fire® energy has been active in the world since ancient times. Based on sessions with the late Janice Jones, a spiritual adviser, our understanding is that God, working through the Holy Spirit created Holy Fire® energy and Jesus is the one who first brought this healing energy to the Earth. While the words Jesus, God and Holy Spirit, are used in religion, in the practice of Holy Fire® Reiki we do not consider them to be religious, but instead, consider them to be spiritual in nature.
According to William Rand Reiki Master Teacher and Founder of Reiki.org:
It is important to keep in mind that the entire Holy Fire® Reiki system is not something I designed or created, but something that came to me as part of healing sessions I had with two talented spiritual healers who channeled illumined beings.
While Jesus was the spiritual master who introduced Holy Fire® Reiki, he is also part of a group called the Brothers and Sisters of the Light. This group is a combined force of all illumined beings and includes those beings from which all the world’s religions and spiritual paths have originated. Previously they were in the formless world but came into the world of form so they could assist us in the development, teaching and use of Holy Fire® Reiki.

--Dr. Mikao Usui
Founded in Japan in 1914 by Dr. Mikao Usui, Reiki is a combination of two Japanese words, rei and ki, meaning universal life energy. This ancient healing technique is one of the most widely known forms of healing and involves the transference of energy between practitioners and their clients to restore harmony to the biofield, increase the client's energy to heal, and balance the body's subtle energies (physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual). Reiki is a complementary health approach in which practitioners place their hands lightly on or just above an individual with the goal of facilitating the person's own healing response through the transmission of energy (universal life-force) (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health [NCCIH], 2018; The International Center for Reiki training, 2018).
The principles of Reiki evolved from ancient Tibetan Buddhist healing practices and were handed down from teacher to disciple. There are many varieties of Reiki, depending on the beliefs and experience of the teachers. Considered to be a spiritual system, Reiki has been used by practitioners of Christianity, Buddhism, Shintoism, Hinduism, and Islam.
Reiki practitioners undergo a number of training levels. Although Reiki has not received the same degree of scientific study in the United States as Therapeutic Touch and Healing Touch, evidence of its efficacy does exist. Certified Reiki masters are now employed as energy therapists in many hospitals and clinics in the West (Borang, 2013; Dale, 2013).
While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma and is not dependent on a belief system. Reiki is taught through the oral tradition, rather than through written materials. Reiki is "transferred" to the student through an "attunement" given in person by a Reiki master (teacher). This attunement or initiation allows the practitioner to tap into an unlimited supply of "life-force energy," which they can use to improve their own and others' health and quality of life (The Healing Pages, 2018).
A Reiki session is an individualized experience that is relaxing, gentle, and safe for all individuals. The practitioner is obligated to respect the client's confidentiality, be considerate of the client's needs, and answer the client's questions. Reiki does not promise to cure any illness or condition or replace the need for any medical treatments.
During a typical Reiki session, the client lies on a padded treatment table, fully clothed, while relaxing soft music often plays in the background. Prior to the treatment, the practitioner assesses the client's energy field by placing his or her hands over the client's body while performing a scan known as a Byosen Scan. This scan enables a skilled practitioner to determine the areas in the client's energy field where healing efforts may need to be focused. A subtle difference is felt in his or her hands at those areas (Petter, 2007; University of Minnesota, 2016).
The practitioner then places his or her hands above, or lightly touches, specific areas called chakras, places in the body through which the energy flows. This is never intrusive. The client may begin to feel very relaxed as he or she allows the energy to flow to the areas in their body where it is most needed. It is at this stage that most people begin to feel the stress in their body easing. It can be a remarkable experience and, for most people, the effects are immediate. Others may not notice any changes for a few days. The more open to Reiki a person is, the more intense their experience can be (Dale, 2013).
If a person is having problems in specific areas of the body, the practitioner will concentrate more healing efforts in those locations. Reiki practitioners believe that healing energy always goes where it is most needed by the client, whether it is mental, physical, and/or spiritual in nature. During their sessions, many clients report that they felt calm, relaxed, and sometimes even tingly, although some clients will have no sensations at all during or after the treatment. It is not uncommon for a client to present with pain and leave with little or no pain. Since no two individuals have the same energetic levels, Reiki clients can experience a full range of sensations from nothing at all to complete relaxation. The level of sensations is not a reflection of the validity or effectiveness of the treatment (Dale, 2013; University of Minnesota, 2016).
Those receiving Reiki in a hospital, hospice, nursing home, or other healthcare setting may have a shorter session (15 or 20 minutes), while some private practitioners give 90-minute sessions. Most sessions vary between these two time frames (Dale, 2013).
Reiki is used for treating a variety of health conditions, including the effects of stress, chronic pain, and the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. It is also used to improve immunity, a sense of well-being, and recovery from surgery and anesthesia. Reiki has been demonstrated to decrease anxiety and promote relaxation, support the healing process, and ease distress (Dale, 2013; Petter, 2007; Weil, 2018b). Reiki appears to be generally safe. In studies of Reiki, side effects were no more common among participants who received Reiki than among those who do not receive it (NCCIH, 2014).
